Alexander the Great (356-323BC) round plaque
Alexander III the Great, the King of Macedonia and conqueror of the Persian Empire is considered
one of the greatest military geniuses of all times. He was inspiration for later conquerors such as
Hannibal the Carthaginian, the Romans Pompey and Caesar, and Napoleon. Alexander was born
in 356 BC in Pella, the ancient capital of Macedonia. He was son of Philip II, King of Macedonia,
and Olympias, the princess of neighboring Epirus. At age 20, having come to the throne of
Macedonia after his father's death, he led the Macedonian army against the Persian king Darius
and conquered the entire Persian Empire. Macedonia became to largest empire, stretching from
Europe to India and for the next three centuries the Macedonians ruled most of this area, ending
with Cleopatra VII in 30 BC, the last Macedonian ruler of Egypt.
